Yu also said that the new models would have a design never before seen. Now, several images have emerged which play to that idea.

Here’s everything we know so far.

Display

Well, we’re familiar with displays that ease down the edge of the phone, including the strikingly attractive “waterfall” sloping sides of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro. So, perhaps it’s not a surprise that Huawei seemingly wants to take things a stage further with its next phones. The P40 and P40 Pro displays seem to curve around all four edges of the phone, not just the long sides , according to leaks from the reliable @OnLeaks and @91Mobiles.

A waterfall that flows in every direction, then. The result of such a design would be the corners are the only bits that are screen-free, as the leaked image below suggests.

There’s also been another render claiming to be of a screen protector, at GizChina and picked up by BGR, which seems to fit with this, with the image suggesting that all four edges are curved.

One more thing, it’s believed that the P40 will have a display sized at or slightly larger than 6.1 inches and the more deluxe P40 Pro will be larger, with a display 6.5 inches or as much as 6.7 inches.

There may be a pinhole camera in the middle of the display.

Cameras

So much for the display, what about the rear of the handset? According to recent claims, there will be a large rectangular camera housing on the back of the phone in the top left corner. There will be multiple sensors, as there are on the P30 Pro and Mate 30 Pro, though the exact capabilities of the sensors are to be confirmed. The very latest renders, not proof you understand, come from Target YouTube. These show five camera sensors, including one which is a periscope camera.

As you’ll know, that doesn’t mean the camera rises up from the body of the phone, no, no, it’s that a mirror on the surface is angled so the light is shot sideways inside the body of the phoned. This enables a much bigger zoom than a slim phone would otherwise permit and in this case, according to the ever-reliable Ming-Chi Kuo, picked up by MacRumors, will mean there’s a 10x optical zoom on the P40 Pro.

Which will really be something.

Operating system

With any other phone company, apart from Apple, there’s only one answer: Android. But, as fellow Forbes contributor Zak Doffman has reported, because Huawei can’t add Google Mobile Services to basic open-source Android, the company may finally launch its own Harmony Mobile Services operating software to a phone, with enough solid apps for navigation, email. Messaging and more to make it a genuine if fledgling rival to Android.

Release date

Since the last two P series handsets were unveiled on 27 March and 26 March respectively, late March seems likely for the P40 series.

As more details become clear, I’ll be updating this post so please check back.
