Mac mini Pro concept proposes easily stackable, modular upgrades

This Mac mini Pro concept is very modular. This proposed Mac mini Pro could get more storage, or a graphics processor, just by placing a new module on top of it.

A concept artists imagines a Mac mini Pro that can be upgraded simply by placing an SSD or GPU module on top of the main computer. And his basic design borrows quite a bit from the “cheese grater” Mac Pro that launched in 2019.

Watch video teaser for this concept now:

This proposal is the brainchild of Kevin Noki, who previous dreamed up MacPad Pro and iPhone XII concepts.

Mac mini Pro concept can be upgraded in many ways

The exterior of this miniature desktop uses the same “circles in a circle” vent holes as last year’s Mac Pro. And it takes another design cue from the latest macOS desktop: extreme upgradability. RAM, storage and the processor can all be easily swapped out.

But the highlight of this Mac mini Pro is the exterior modules. The idea is that a new graphics card or additional hard drive could be added by just stacking it on top of the central unit.

Noki’s proposal says these would be “powered and connected through a similar wireless-technology like NFC.” He doesn’t explore how this would work in any detail. And Thunderbolt 3 might be a better option.

The 2019 Mac Pro shows that Apple can make a very user upgradable computer if it wants to. Whether it wants to do that for a low-cost model like the Mac Pro is another question.
