Steam Link adds controller customization, big improvements

Steam Link just got its first big update since finally hitting the App Store on iOS. This release — version 1.1.36 — brings the ability to remap controller buttons and a number of big improvements.

For a long time it looked like iOS users would never get the Steam Link app. Apple initially rejected it and gave confusing reasons for its decision, and it was starting to look like Valve had given up.

But back in May, a full year after Steam Link for iOS was announced, it finally hit the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. And now it is getting its first big update.

Steam Link lets you customize controller buttons

The latest Steam Link release gives players the ability to rebind buttons on physical controllers. That means if you don’t link playing games with the default button layout, you can change it.

Steam Link previously allowed rebinding for certain controllers, but attempting to change buttons layouts caused the app to crash. That no longer happens in this version of the app.

This obviously applies only to MFi controllers compatible with iOS for now. But when iOS 13, iPadOS 13, and tvOS 13 roll out this fall, you will also be able to use PlayStation 4 and Xbox One controllers.

Mouse improvements

Today’s update also changes the default mouse mode to Trackpad. Valve has “greatly improved” sensitivity and usability of this mode, which should make playing games with mouse input much better.

In addition, if you have previously changed your touch control layout and it’s not really working out, you now have the ability to reset it from the touch control layout screen.

Finally, this update adds a device form factor for an upcoming Steamworks API.

We’re not entirely sure at this point what that means. It could be support for PS4 and Xbox One controllers — or something entirely new that hasn’t been announced yet.
